Themes and purpose for our meeting

WCC consultative bodies meet every 18 months in order to advise the WCC in its work. Echos has both an advisory function and a networking function to encourage ecumenism among the churches—and especially the youth. The purpose of this meeting is to update one another about the work that has been done since May 2007. In this report, each Echos member is expected to give a written and oral report (guidelines for these reports can be found under the page ‘Program’ and ‘Guidelines for Reports’ ). The other purpose is for Echos to examine the work it will do until the next WCC Assembly in 2013. What do we need to adjust in our plans from the last meeting in order to meet our goals? What is it that young people need from the ecumenical movement? What does the ecumenical movement need from young people? Are the goals still clear or do they need to be rearticulated? Are our goals realistic? How will we carry them out?

In Bangalore we will focus on two specific themes which were identified as priorities at our May 2007 meeting. One is mission and the other is overcoming violence. To address the questions of mission and how to strategize towards the Edinburgh 2010 conference, we are meeting with the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME). In order to address the issues on overcoming violence we will strategize ideas how young people could get involved in the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation in 2011 (IEPC). With us during the meeting will be Ginger Porter, WCC intern working with the Decade to Overcome Violence office.

But these two issues are broad and important and it is not enough to engage young people in large ecumenical conferences. We will also meet with local youth to discuss these issues and what they mean to us as individuals and what they mean to our churches. In this meeting we will try to learn from one another and from the context we are meeting in order to deepen our understanding and analysis of what mission and overcoming violence means and why as young Christians we should address these issues. Some questions to consider:
- What is mission for young Christians today?
- What does mission mean in relation to other churches and people from other religions?
- What does mission mean when faced with the many forms and problems of violence?
